I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed. Here are a few pics of some of the F2’s that I am growing out to sell. The vast majority of the good looking seed are NOT viable.
What is the difference between Foxtail & Foxylady seedlings?
The seed looks pretty elongated, so I would think it would have a lot of Vetchia characteristics. Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on. Look how elongated this viable F2 seed is, that I picked up yesterday.
I agree with Len, yours is most likely a RSN Hawaiian grown, or Sparksman Florida import that has been resold. If you do the 24hr soak thing, put a weak solution of seaweed extract in the water too. This would happen far more quickly for you than it does for those of us in the humid tropics where the plant tissues survive on atmospheric moisture for ages before the final collapse.

- 1 of each 3 and 7 is slightly variegated with 2 of each being greens.
- Even in the slowest sickliest palm, you should notice some movement of the spear – even 1/8 of an inch in a week assures that your palm is still alive.

- F1 hybrids tend to be more consistent, and I guess this is why what we know as a foxy lady (F1) has its signature look.

I moved the pot to a shadier spot in my yard and applied copious water this morning, and went home at lunch and gave it another soaking. From what I understand, this tree has been in the pot all along and was not recently potted from a field grown specimen. A plant like this that makes tons of roots hates being in a pot made for Hawaii or FL.
This is a holy grail palm for many of us PTers. Going to a spot in the Los Angeles area If you know anyone looking who would make a good palm parent send em my way. It’s in a 15 gal but it ideally should go in the ground soon, it’s filled in that pot already. Alas, the time has come.
I’m no geneticist, but I’ve heard F2 hybrids of anything can be hugely variable with dominant traits ranging from either parent. Also how f2 compares to f1 on their cold hardiness aswell as growth rate. I have an f2 and am wondering how the look of the palm compares to f1. A guy in my area has them for sale pick up at 200 for a baby 1 gallon pot , he had 4 now he has 3 , i got one today and I am looking forward to watching it grow

They can be solid green without any variegation. Can you tell me if this baby foxy is a full green ? I bought one like that on eBay recently and it will eventually be planted in a shady/partially sunny area of the garden.
Sometime even though they are hard, they float. They s/b just a hard and firm as foxy gold a foxtail or vetchia to be viable. The fastest way I check for viable seed is to roll the seed on concrete with my foot, giving it some moderate pressure. It took about years of seeding until some viable seed dropped. I have been growing F2 Foxy Ladies for the last 3 years. Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today.
After many years and trees that are ungodly tall, my foxy lady, 1 of 2 dropped 2 very ripe very real looking seeds. I’m hoping that the foxy lady will turn all green it only has 1 frond that is variegated. I’ve been growing this foxy lady a few years now and I think it’s time to rehome her. Is there any way to tell if seeds are hybridized by looking at them as they develop? So my question would be if this palm is mostly green will it do well in full sun

- That palm is 100% solid dark healthy green.
- They will feel heavier than the empty seeds as well.
- Regular ‘ol green specimens always look flawless.
- Well mine has a sparse seed set that dropped today.
- The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated.
- Where did that palm originate?
Good quality plant and amazing growth. I bought a 7 gallon from Premier Growers about 8 months ago and it’s already outgrowing the 25 gallon pot I moved it into. Was it grown from a seed made by nature or by manual cross pollination? Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds.
I do need to get better on checking my palm talk tho! Purchased several years ago as a seedling from a breeder in Florida. Where did that palm originate? I hope/expect some new batches to hit the market sometime soon.
From the pic seems like your palm flew across the country unharmed. Actually,light variegation is not a bad thing. Premier has sargentii seedlings and 7gal vinifera but they don’t know how to ship. I am lousy at keeping seedlings alive let alone sargentii seedlings!
Leaning Foxy Lady palm
If so did they sprout around the same time frame? If there are variegated foxladies, they are obvious. What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases. @here does anyone have Foxy Lady seed they would like to sell? Wanting to put them out but not if they’re not a true hybrid. Hybrids seem to have a higher rate of growth for some reason.
F1 vs f2 foxy lady
I believe most of the time the seeds never germinate but very occasionally they do. I have some flowering/fruiting foxtails near an adonidia doing the same. I have a couple of completely green ones in my yard and there isn’t a bit of variegation
If you’re up to a good challenge, Kopsick Palm – Arboretum in St. Pete has a few specimens, at least one that can / has produced seed. Or is there anyone on this forum growing the legendary tree? Lol but really I’ve only heard amazing things from this palm and I absolutely love the looks from it. The hybrid Wodyetia bifurcata x Veitchia arecina. I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
That should happen in shade and then it should be shifted up and placed gradually into more and more sun over the course of a month or two until it is hardened and can go in the ground. Do you have a FULL shade spot under some trees or overhang? I used a 4 foot bamboo stick I bought at Home Depot and tied it to the broken leaf. Mine’s established and I still water it almost daily.
